Nature Restoration Fund; 2025 - 2026 Project.

Colin and Flora dropping off the 6 Tamworth pigs that are going to be turning over the overgrown tussocks of grass to then enable us to make the small paddock into a flower wildlife meadow with water features. Happy pigs, December 2025.

The pigs have done a great job in the few short weeks they have been up here. But, time to go now so that we can get onto the land and re-establish features like the burns that ran through it and make waterways that assist in creating better wet areas for dragon flies / newts and the like.

The pigs certainly did a good job of clearing the overgrown tussocks, even in the horrible conditions we have had in the last month, which included snow and plenty of rain. They loved the site and all the people walking pass loved the pigs. Shame to see them go, but now we can get in and do our bit so that it hopefully starts to become a real nature haven for a diverse range of wee beasties and creepy crawlies.

We are aiming at encouraging the Northern Brown Argus butterfly by planting areas with Rock Rose and have also sown the area with yellow rattle that will hopefully help stop the grasses coming back so strong and taking over again. There will be meandering burns with pools created for still water to accommodate a wider variety of water loving insects and plants.

We have finished the tree corridor planting and putting spaced out trees into the field area and have decided on the water course features we wish to incorporate to help prevent flooding further down the burns route, such as; leaky dams and side pools to take high water levels away from the main burn when required.

Final pictures coming soon, as we will have completed the projects work for this year. Final bits to do are; sow the last selection of wildflower seeds supplied by Scotia Seeds and to plant the plugs we have coming from a nursery near Edinburgh. Complete a circular large stone area for seating and incorporate a few stacks of stones for natural cover and sunbathing spots for lizard`s and hopefully adders. Time will tell, and more pictures coming in spring / summer to show the results of the flower re-locations from other spots on the farm of things like; Yellow Flag Iris / Red Campion / Spotted Marsh Orchid etc.

Thank you to all at Perth and Kinross Nature Restoration Fund, especially for the help given by Hannah. Cheers.
